About this Matn

This short wisdom poem distills counsel on the ethics of the soul detachment from the dunya, reliance on Allah, sincerity in deeds, and the adab of the spiritual path in a compact and memorable form. A gateway to the moral and spiritual teachings of the great Shadhili master whose longer al-Hikam al-Ataiyyah remains one of the most celebrated texts of Islamic spirituality.

About the Author

Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Karim ibn Ata Allah al-Iskandari, known as Ibn Ata Allah al-Iskandari (c. 1250-1309 CE), was an Egyptian Maliki scholar and the third master (shaykh) of the Shadhili tariqah after its founding lineage. Born in Alexandria and educated in Cairo, he is said to have initially opposed Sufism before his transformative encounter with Shaykh Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi drew him into the Shadhili path. He is best known for al-Hikam al-Ataiyyah, widely considered one of the most profound books of Islamic spirituality ever written.
