2.5 percent of net wealth held for a full lunar year. This is a guide, not a ruling; ask a scholar about pensions, property and business assets.

How it is worked out

Zakāt is due once a year on wealth that has reached the nisāb and stayed with you for a full lunar year. The nisāb is the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver at today's price. Many scholars advise using the silver figure because it is lower, so more people give.

Zakatable wealth includes cash and bank balances, gold and silver by weight, shares and funds at market value, business stock at its sale value, and money you are owed and expect to receive. Debts falling due within the year are subtracted. The rate is one fortieth, that is 2.5 percent, of the net figure.

Not counted: your home, car, clothes, tools of your trade and household goods. Pensions, property held for investment and long-term loans are matters of scholarly difference; ask a scholar you trust.
