Nullifier 8 Supporting Polytheists Against Muslims: Nawāqiḍ al-Islām

The Arabic Text of the Nullifier

الثَّامِنُ: مُظَاهَرَةُ المُشْرِكِينَ وَمُعَاوَنَتُهُمْ عَلَى المُسْلِمِين. وَالدَّلِيلُ: ﴿وَمَنْ يَتَوَلَّهُمْ مِنْكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْهُمْ﴾ "The eighth: supporting (muẓāharah) the polytheists and aiding them against the Muslims. The proof: 'And whoever among you takes them as allies then indeed he is one of them.' [al-Māʾidah 5:51]"

Muẓāharah Defined

Al-Fawzān defines muẓāharah specifically as: actively assisting, backing, and giving support military, logistical, intelligence, or financial to the polytheists (or disbelievers) in their conflict against Muslims. It is a high and active level of alliance, not merely cordial relations. The word comes from ẓahr (back) giving one's back (strength and support) to the enemy against Muslims.

Al-Walāʾ wal-Barāʾ The Framework

Al-Fawzān situates the eighth nullifier within the broader doctrine of al-walāʾ wal-barāʾ (loyalty to believers, disavowal of disbelievers) and identifies distinct levels:

Level 1 Muẓāharah (military/active support against Muslims): The level that constitutes kufr akbar this nullifier
Level 2 Muwālāt al-qalb (love of disbelievers in the heart): Completely forbidden; scholars debate whether it reaches kufr
Level 3 Madḥ wa-thanāʾ (praising disbelievers): Forbidden
Level 4 Muwāsāh (sympathy, fair dealing, ordinary relations): Permitted with non-hostile non-Muslims

Three Conditions al-Fawzān Requires

For this nullifier to apply to a specific person, al-Fawzān identifies three conditions:

ʿIlm (knowledge): The person must know they are supporting polytheists against Muslims
Ikhtiyār (free choice): The support must be voluntary, not under compulsion
Intent to support kufr against Islam: The act must be in the nature of allying with enemies of Allah against His religion and its people

Quranic Proofs

﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا اليَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى أَوْلِيَاءَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ وَمَنْ يَتَوَلَّهُمْ مِنْكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْهُم﴾ Al-Māʾidah 5:51 "O you who believe, do not take the Jews and Christians as close allies. Whoever among you allies with them he is indeed one of them."

﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا الكَافِرِينَ أَوْلِيَاءَ مِنْ دُونِ المُؤْمِنِين﴾ Al-Nisāʾ 4:144 "O you who believe, do not take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do you wish to give Allah a clear argument against you?"

﴿بَشِّرِ المُنَافِقِينَ بِأَنَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا الَّذِينَ يَتَّخِذُونَ الكَافِرِينَ أَوْلِيَاءَ مِنْ دُونِ المُؤْمِنِين﴾ Al-Nisāʾ 4:138–139 "Give tidings to the hypocrites that there is a painful punishment for them those who take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers."

What Does NOT Constitute This Nullifier

Al-Fawzān is emphatic: "Helping non-Muslims does not automatically make one a disbeliever context matters."

These do NOT constitute the eighth nullifier:

Trading and economic relations with non-Muslims entirely permitted
Political and diplomatic engagement where Muslims are not at war
Being kind and fair to peaceful non-Muslim neighbours, colleagues, or citizens al-Mumtaḥanah 60:8 explicitly permits this
Hiring a non-Muslim employee, or working for a non-Muslim employer in legitimate work
Muslim men married to Christian or Jewish women a permissible marital relationship

These DO constitute the eighth nullifier:

Providing military intelligence to enemies fighting against Muslims
Fighting alongside non-Muslim armies against Muslim populations
Supporting occupation forces in Muslim lands against the Muslim population
Active collaboration with those waging war against Islam and its people
