Lesson 14

Practice on Shaddah and Sukūn Together

Many Qurʾānic words contain both shaddah and sukūn. This lesson builds the precision to handle both in quick succession.

The Challenge

When shaddah and sukūn appear in the same word, you must manage:

  1. A doubled letter (shaddah) first instance sākin, second voweled
  2. Another sākin letter (sukūn) no vowel, crisp stop

The key is to never blur the stops. Each sākin must be clean.

Drill

اَلضَّالِّينaḍ-ḍāllīn "the astray" shaddah on ḍ and on l
يُضَلِّلyuḍallil lām shaddah + final lām sākin
مُتَّقِينmuttaqīn tāʾ shaddah then qāf + leen yāʾ
أَشَدُّashaddu dāl shaddah at end
مُسْتَقِيمٌmustaqīmun sīn sākin + qāf + madd yāʾ + tanwīn
يَسْتَعِينُyastaʿīnu sīn sākin + ʿayn + madd yāʾ

Sūrat Al-Fātiḥah Full Reading

Read the whole sūrah carefully, marking every shaddah and sukūn before you begin:
