Sūrah Al-ʿAṣr The Declining Day
العصر
Al-Qurṭubī derives from this surah's oath by ʿaṣr (time/afternoon) the fiqh ruling on ʿAṣr prayer timing the single most practically significant prayer-time disagreement between the four schools.
Al-Qurṭubī derives from the divine oath by "al-ʿaṣr" the special status of this time an entire surah named after it and uses this to address the most practically significant prayer timing disagreement. The ʿAṣr timing debate originates from two different prophetic statements about when Jibrīl led the Prophet in prayer: once when shadow equaled object height (early ʿAṣr), once when shadow equaled twice the height (late ʿAṣr). Schools interpreted these as indicating the range of ʿAṣr rather than resolving the start time.
The practical consequence is stark: someone following Ḥanafī timing is still in their valid ẓuhr window when someone following Mālikī/Shāfiʿī timing has already entered ʿAṣr. Both are performing valid prayers within what their school recognizes as the legally established time window neither is praying at the wrong time according to their school's ijtihād. Al-Qurṭubī applies the uṣūl principle al-khilāf al-muʿtabar: both timing positions are based on authentic evidence and legitimate ijtihād no condemnation of either side is appropriate.
- ʿAṣr timing: Ḥanafī (shadow = 2x object height, late start); Mālikī and Shāfiʿī (shadow = 1x height, earlier start); Ḥanbalī (both positions present in the school).
- The practical consequence: Ḥanafī followers pray ẓuhr while Mālikī/Shāfiʿī followers have already entered ʿAṣr the largest daily practical timing difference between schools.
- Both timing positions are legitimate ijtihād based on authentic prophetic evidence al-Qurṭubī explicitly affirms both as valid within their school frameworks.
- The ʿAṣr prayer within its window is farḍ ʿayn deliberately delaying it past its window into the sunset forbidden zone is a major sin in all schools.
- The surah's three-element salvation formula (iman + righteous deeds + mutual counsel in truth + mutual counsel in patience) is among the most comprehensive Qurʾānic summaries of the Muslim's obligation.
