Lesson 45

Sūrah Al-Jāthiyah The Crouching

الجاثية

Al-Qurṭubī derives from this surah's command to reflect on creation the obligation of maʿrifah (knowing Allah), mapping the legal status of tafakkur (reflection) across the four schools.

SurahAl-JāthiyahMeccanSigns in creation as proof of divine existence
Key Fiqh IssueTafakkur (reflection) and wujūb al-maʿrifah (obligation of knowing Allah)Farḍ ʿayn at minimum thresholdFoundation of all other obligations
School ComparisonḤanafī: maʿrifah through rational reflection is farḍ ʿayn; Mālikī: same; Shāfiʿī: knowing Allah's existence is farḍ ʿayn; Ḥanbalī: maʿrifah confirmed through tafakkur is obligatoryFarḍ ʿaynUniversal obligation pre-dating all ritual obligations
Uṣūl PrincipleWujūb al-maʿrifah knowing Allah's existence is the first obligationFarḍ ʿaynPre-condition for all other taklīf

Al-Qurṭubī derives from verse 13 "signs for a people who reflect" that tafakkur (rational reflection on creation) is not merely recommended but constitutes the mechanism for fulfilling the farḍ ʿayn obligation of knowing Allah's existence. The four schools agree that maʿrifat Allah is the first obligation upon a legally responsible adult; they differ slightly on what counts as sufficient knowledge.

The uṣūl principle wujūb al-maʿrifah establishes that faith cannot be blind imitation (taqlīd) at the foundational level each mukallaf must possess at minimum a conviction in Allah's existence arrived at through their own faculties. Al-Qurṭubī maps three levels: (1) knowing that Allah exists (farḍ ʿayn), (2) knowing His attributes (farḍ kifāyah for depth of knowledge), (3) scholarly mastery of kalām (farḍ kifāyah on the community). The signs in creation seas, heavens, animals are the Qurʾānic triggers for fulfilling this first obligation.

وَسَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا مِّنْهُ Wa-sakhkhara lakum mā fī l-samāwāti wa-mā fī l-arḍi jamīʿan minhu Meaning: "And He has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth all of it from Him" Al-Qurṭubī: the subjugation of creation for human benefit is both a sign (āyah) for tafakkur and a ground for shukr (gratitude); the verse establishes that the whole of creation testifies to Allah's existence and generosity.
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ Inna fī dhālika la-āyātin li-qawmin yatafakkarūn Meaning: "Indeed in that are signs for a people who reflect" Al-Qurṭubī: "a people who reflect" (yatafakkarūn) the present tense implies continuous reflection as a practice; al-Qurṭubī derives that tafakkur is an ongoing act of worship fulfilling the maʿrifah obligation, not a one-time event.
  • Knowing Allah's existence (maʿrifat Allah) is farḍ ʿayn on every mukallaf the first and foundational obligation before all ritual duties.
  • Tafakkur (reflection on creation) is the Qurʾānically prescribed mechanism for fulfilling this obligation the signs in this surah serve as ʿibādah invitations.
  • All four schools agree that blind taqlīd alone is insufficient at the foundational ʿaqīdah level personal conviction is required.
  • Depth of theological knowledge is farḍ kifāyah the community needs qualified scholars of kalām; not every individual must master detailed theology.
  • The surah connects tafakkur to gratitude (shukr) reflecting on subjugated creation generates a duty of acknowledgment and worship.
