Conditional Sentences الجمل الشرطية
إِنْ + jussive verb = real/possible condition. لَوْ + past tense = hypothetical/unlikely condition. The answer clause (jawāb al-sharṭ) follows.
إِنْ تَتَعَلَّمِ الْعَرَبِيَّةَ بِجِدٍّ تَفْهَمِ الْقُرْآنَ مُبَاشَرَة
In tataʿallami l-ʿarabiyyata bijiddin tafhami l-Qurʾāna mubāshara
If you learn Arabic seriously, you will understand the Quran directly.
لَوْ أَتْقَنْتُ الْعَرَبِيَّةَ لَقَرَأْتُ كُتُبَ الْعُلَمَاءِ فِي أُصُولِهَا
Law atqantu l-ʿarabiyyata laqaraʾtu kutuba l-ʿulamāʾi fī uṣūlihā
If I had mastered Arabic, I would have read the scholars' books in their originals.
- إِنْ + jussive: Both condition and result use jussive mood يَفْعَل loses its ḍamma, ending in sukūn.
- لَوْ + past + لَـ + past: Hypothetical the لَـ prefix marks the result clause.
- أَتْقَنَ: Form IV of تَقَنَ "to master/perfect" a key verb for discussing language learning.
- Islamic motivation: The conditional sentence perfectly captures the Islamic principle of linking effort (شَرْط) to reward (جَزَاء).
