Iqraʾ bismi rabbika lladhī khalaq
"Read in the name of your Lord Who created." (96:1) The first Quranic revelation, commanding literacy itself.
مَنْ قَرَأَ كِتَاباً فَكَأَنَّمَا فَتَحَ نَافِذَةً عَلَى الْعَالَم
Man qaraʾa kitāban fakaʾannamā fataḥa nāfidhatan ʿalā l-ʿālam
Whoever reads a book has, as it were, opened a window onto the world. (Arabic proverb)
- كَأَنَّمَا: "As if / as it were" a strong tashbīh particle combining كَأَنَّ + مَا.
- مَنْ conditional: مَنْ قَرَأَ = "whoever reads" a general conditional using the relative pronoun مَن.
- First revelation اِقْرَأ: The command to read the first word revealed to the Prophet ﷺ places reading at the heart of Islam.
- Arabic proverbs: Arabic has a rich proverbial tradition proverbs at this level are a window into classical Arab thought patterns.
