Baynamā kāna Juḥā yamshī fī s-sūqi, raʾā ḥimāran yalbasu qubbʿa
While Juḥā was walking in the market, he saw a donkey wearing a hat. (classic Juḥā anecdote opening)
- كَانَ يَفْعَل: "Was doing / used to do" the imperfect past, combining kāna + present verb for ongoing or habitual past action.
- بَيْنَمَا: "While / whereas" introduces a simultaneous background action; the main event interrupts it.
- Juḥā: The beloved comic figure of classical Arabic folk tales his witty anecdotes are known from Morocco to Central Asia.
- Islamic humour: The Prophet ﷺ himself smiled and joked but always spoke truth. خَفِّفُوا (lighten up) balance is an Islamic virtue.
