Key Themes from Al-Ṭabarī

Al-Ṭabarī definitively settles the prophet-versus-wise-man debate for Luqmān: he was given ḥikmah (wisdom), not waḥy (prophetic revelation). He cites the chain from Ibn ʿAbbās "I heard that Luqmān was given the choice between prophethood and wisdom; he chose wisdom" as establishing that his counsels represent human wisdom divinely endorsed, not prophetic commands. This matters because it means Luqmān's wisdom applies to all humans, not just as a model of prophetic behavior.

The counsels (31:13–19) are traced individually: (1) do not associate with Allah traced through chains to tawḥīd as foundation; (2) honor parents but do not obey them in shirk traced through chains to the hadīth that no obedience to creation in disobedience to Allah; (3) deeds the weight of a mustard seed will be seen traced as a general principle of accountability; (4) establish prayer, command good, forbid evil, be patient traced as the prophetic virtues in miniature; (5) do not be arrogant traced through chains on tawāḍuʿ (humility) in the Prophet's practice.

يَا بُنَيَّ لَا تُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ Yā bunayya lā tushrik billāhi inna sh-shirka la-ẓulmun ʿaẓīm "O my son, do not associate with Allah indeed association is a great wrong" (31:13) Al-Ṭabarī: the first counsel is tawḥīd; the justification "great wrong" is traced through chains to the ḥadīth where the Prophet explained that shirk is the one wrong that will not be forgiven.
وَإِن جَاهَدَاكَ عَلَىٰ أَن تُشْرِكَ بِي مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا Wa-in jāhadāka ʿalā an tushrika bī mā laysa laka bihī ʿilmun fa-lā tuṭiʿhumā "And if they strive to make you associate with Me what you have no knowledge of, then do not obey them" (31:15) Al-Ṭabarī: the limit of parental obedience is clearly established shirk is the line; this is the universal Islamic principle on the hierarchy of obligations.
  • Luqmān as wise man: Al-Ṭabarī's chain-based conclusion wisdom, not prophethood makes his counsel universally applicable human wisdom endorsed by divine mention.
  • Tawḥīd first: The first of Luqmān's counsels is against shirk al-Ṭabarī traces this as the foundational principle from which all others derive.
  • Parental obedience limits: The clear line no obedience to parents in shirk is established through chains connecting this verse to the prophetic ḥadīth on the hierarchy of obligations.
  • Mustard seed accountability: 31:16 is connected by al-Ṭabarī to the atom-weight verse (99:7–8) both establish the universality and precision of divine accounting.
  • Moderate voice: 31:19 "lower your voice; verily the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys" is traced through chains as establishing vocal modesty as an Islamic virtue.
