Key Themes from Al-Ṭabarī

The filial piety verse (46:15) is analyzed through chains from Abū Hurayrah and Ibn ʿAbbās connecting it to the Prophet's emphasis on honoring parents. Al-Ṭabarī notes this verse specifies the mother's burden: "carried him in weakness upon weakness" and "his weaning is in two years." He traces chains connecting this verse to the hadith of the man who asked "who is most deserving of my good companionship?" the Prophet answered "your mother" three times before mentioning the father.

The jinn episode (46:29–32) is analyzed through chains on the identity of these jinn chains from Ibn ʿAbbās say they were from Niṣībīn (a town in northern Iraq/Syria). He then traces the prophetic account: the Prophet was at ʿUkāẓ market reciting Quran when a group of jinn heard it, believed, and returned to their people. Al-Ṭabarī presents multiple chains for this event and assesses their authenticity.

وَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ إِحْسَانًا ۖ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُ كُرْهًا وَوَضَعَتْهُ كُرْهًا Wa-waṣṣaynā l-insāna bi-wālidayhi iḥsānan ḥamalat-hu ummuhu kurhan wa-waḍaʿat-hu kurhā "And We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship." (46:15) Al-Ṭabarī connects this through chains to the specific mother-priority hadith, making the verse the Quranic basis for the prophetic emphasis on honoring mothers.
وَإِذْ صَرَفْنَا إِلَيْكَ نَفَرًا مِّنَ الْجِنِّ يَسْتَمِعُونَ الْقُرْآنَ Wa-idh ṣarafnā ilayka nafaran mina l-jinni yastamiʿūna l-Qurʾān "And when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Quran." (46:29) Al-Ṭabarī presents multiple chains on the identity, number, and origin of these jinn, showing his characteristic method of exhaustive chain collection before narrating the scene.
  • Filial piety basis: Al-Ṭabarī treats 46:15 as the Quranic root for all mother-priority narrations connecting Quranic command to prophetic elaboration through chains.
  • Jinn geography: The Niṣībīn identification of the jinn is presented through strong chains from Ibn ʿAbbās al-Ṭabarī considers this the most supported view.
  • ʿĀd geography: He traces the location of Aḥqāf through Companion geographical knowledge southern Arabia.
  • Jinn accountability: 46:31–32 shows jinn are accountable before Allah just as humans al-Ṭabarī draws this as a theological principle through chain analysis.
  • Closing of Ḥawāmīm: Al-Ṭabarī notes the Ḥawāmīm series ends here he provides an overview of the seven sūrahs as a thematic and structural unit.
