Key Themes from Al-Ṭabarī

The "clear victory" (fatḥ mubīn, 48:1) generates one of al-Ṭabarī's most historically rich analyses. He traces chains from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb himself: ʿUmar questioned the Prophet whether this was truly a victory when the Muslims had been prevented from reaching the Kaʿbah. The Prophet replied: "Yes." Al-Ṭabarī then traces chains from Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh, who was present, confirming that Ḥudaybiyah was understood by the Companions as the "fatḥ" referenced. He acknowledges the minority view but finds the Ḥudaybiyah chain stronger.

The "pledge of the tree" (bayʿat al-shajarah, 48:18) is one of the most authenticated events in Islamic history. Al-Ṭabarī traces chains from Jābir, Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ, and others who took the pledge under a specific acacia tree. He notes the Prophet's statement that all who pledged under the tree would not enter Hell and traces chains on how the tree was later lost (ʿUmar ordered it cut to prevent people worshipping it).

إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًا مُّبِينًا Innā fataḥnā laka fatḥan mubīnan "Indeed, We have given you a clear conquest." (48:1) Al-Ṭabarī traces the chain from ʿUmar's questioning and the Prophet's confirmation that Ḥudaybiyah is the "clear victory" the divine reframing of a seeming setback as actually a divinely ordained opening.
لَّقَدْ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ يُبَايِعُونَكَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ La-qad raḍiya Allāhu ʿani l-muʾminīna idh yubāyiʿūnaka taḥta l-shajarah "Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree." (48:18) Al-Ṭabarī traces chains from multiple Ḥudaybiyah participants describing the scene over 1,400 Companions pledging, the Prophet placing his hand over theirs as the pledge of allegiance.
  • Ḥudaybiyah as victory: Al-Ṭabarī's chain evidence from eyewitnesses especially ʿUmar and Jābir settles the identification as the strongest position.
  • Tree pledge authentication: Multiple chains from different witnesses of the pledge make this one of the most authenticated events in al-Ṭabarī's tafsīr.
  • Divine reframing: Apparent setbacks in the path of truth may be divine openings al-Ṭabarī draws this as a general principle from the surah.
  • Tree removal: ʿUmar's order to cut the tree (to prevent devotion to it) is cited through chains al-Ṭabarī presents it as blocking the path to shirk.
  • Divine pleasure: 48:18's "Allah was pleased with them" is treated as a definitive statement of divine approval for the Ḥudaybiyah Companions.
