The Definite Article Alif Laam

ال التعريف

الـ (al-) is the Arabic definite article equivalent to "the." Its most important rule: the lām assimilates into 14 "sun letters" but stays audible before 14 "moon letters."

Sun Letters vs Moon Letters

When الـ comes before a sun letter (حُرُوف شَمْسِيَّة), the lām is silent it assimilates into the following letter, which is doubled. Before moon letters (حُرُوف قَمَرِيَّة), the lām is always pronounced clearly.

TypeLettersExamplePronunciation
Sun (شَمْس)ت ث د ذ ر ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ل نالشَّمْسash-shams (not al-shams)
Moon (قَمَر)ا ب ج ح خ ع غ ف ق ك م و ه يالْقَمَرal-qamar (lām heard)

Sample Dialogue

أ: مَا هَذَا الْكِتَابُ؟ ب: هَذَا كِتَابُ الدَّرْسِ. أ: وَهَذَا؟ ب: هَذَا كِتَابُ النَّحْوِ. A: Mā hādhā l-kitābu? B: Hādhā kitābu d-darsi. A: Wa-hādhā? B: Hādhā kitābu n-naḥwi. A: What is this book? B: This is the lesson book. A: And this? B: This is the grammar book.

Pronunciation Focus

The shaddah (ّ) after الـ means the following consonant is doubled hold it a beat longer. Practice: al-kitāb (moon, lām heard) vs. ash-SHAMS (sun, lām assimilated, shīn doubled). This rule applies constantly in spoken Arabic; internalise it now.

  • The shaddah (ّ) after الـ signals a sun letter the lām has merged into the following consonant.
  • Definite: الْكِتَابُ (the book, specific). Indefinite: كِتَابٌ (a book, any book).
  • Demonstrative + definite article: هَذَا الْكِتَابُ = "this specific book" both elements are definite.
  • Mnemonic: الشَّمْس (the sun) is itself a sun letter (ش) the definite form proves the rule.
  • Mnemonic: الْقَمَر (the moon) begins with قَاف, a moon letter the lām is clearly heard: al-qamar.
