All ʿAṭf Particles

ParticleMeaningEffect on following elementExample
وَand (general additive)Follows case/mood of firstجَاءَ زَيْدٌ وَعَمْرٌو
فَthen immediately (sequential)Follows case/mood of firstدَخَلَ فَجَلَسَ
ثُمَّthen later (with delay)Follows case/mood of firstدَخَلَ ثُمَّ نَامَ
أَوْor (free choice)Follows case/mood of firstاقْرَأْ قُرْآناً أَوْ كِتَاباً
أَمْor (after a direct question)Follows case/mood of firstأَذَهَبَ أَمْ بَقِيَ؟
بَلْrather (corrective)Cancels first elementمَا جَاءَ زَيْدٌ بَلْ عَمْرٌو
لَاand not (corrective negative)Follows case of firstجَاءَ زَيْدٌ لَا عَمْرٌو
حَتَّىeven (gradation to extreme)Follows case of firstأَكَلَ حَتَّى الْعَظْمَ
مَا جَاءَ زَيْدٌ بَلْ عَمْرٌو لَمْ يَأْكُلِ اللَّحْمَ لَكِنِ الْخُبْزَ Mā jāʾa Zaydun bal ʿAmrun Lam yaʾkuli l-laḥma lakini l-khubza Zayd did not come, rather ʿAmr did. He did not eat meat but (ate) bread.
وَمَنْ يَكْسِبْ خَطِيئَةً أَوْ إِثْماً ثُمَّ يَرْمِ بِهِ بَرِيئاً Wa-man yaksib khaṭīʾatan aw ithman thumma yarmi bihi barīʾan "And whoever commits a sin or wrongdoing, then throws it onto an innocent person…" (4:112) أَوْ (or) then ثُمَّ (then later) both conjunctions in a single verse.
  • بَلْ: "rather" cancels what came before and replaces it with the new element; only the second part is affirmed.
  • فَ vs ثُمَّ: فَ means immediate succession; ثُمَّ implies a gap in time the distinction matters in Quranic narratives.
  • أَمْ vs أَوْ: أَمْ is used after a question (seeking clarification between two options); أَوْ is a free-standing "or."
  • حَتَّى (ʿaṭf): "even" implies gradation to an extreme end-point: أَكَلَ حَتَّى الْعَظْمَ (he ate even the bone).
  • All ʿaṭf particles pass the case or mood of the first element onto the second this is the defining feature that separates ʿaṭf from other tawābiʿ.
