Exclusion Part 2 (Negative and Incomplete)

In negative or incomplete sentences, the excluded noun (مُسْتَثْنَى) follows the case required by its position in the sentence it is not automatically accusative.

Mā jāʾa illā Zaydun Lā ilāha illā llāhu
No one came except Zayd. (فَارِغ زَيْدٌ fills the subject slot, nominative) There is no god but Allah. (اللَّهُ = substitute subject, nominative)
مَا جَاءَ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا زَيْدٌ مَا مَرَرْتُ بِأَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِعَمْرٍو
Mā jāʾa aḥadun illā Zaydun Mā marartu bi-aḥadin illā bi-ʿAmrin
Complete negative: زَيْدٌ as badal (nominative) OR زَيْداً as accusative both valid. In prepositional slot: genitive بِعَمْرٍو as badal.
- Incomplete (فَارِغ) sentence: no explicit group before إِلَّا the مُسْتَثْنَى fills the grammatical slot and takes its case from that position.
- The Shahāda: لَا إِلَهَ (accusative under lā nāfiya lil-jins) إِلَّا اللَّهُ (nominative substitute subject in the incomplete sentence).
- In a complete negative, both accusative and badal (positional) are correct badal is more classical and common in ḥadīth.
- After a preposition in a فَارِغ sentence: مَا مَرَرْتُ إِلَّا بِزَيْدٍ بِزَيْدٍ fills the prepositional slot, so genitive.
- This lesson is the key to parsing the Shahāda grammatically one of the most frequently asked iʿrāb questions in Islamic education.
