Introduction to Arabic Morphology Ṣarf

Morphology (عِلْم الصَّرْف) is the science of how Arabic words are built from three-letter roots. Every Arabic word derives from a root understanding this system unlocks vocabulary at exponential speed.

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ
Iqraʾ bismi rabbika lladhī khalaqa ʿAllama l-insāna mā lam yaʿlam
"Read in the name of your Lord who created He taught man what he did not know." (96:1,5) اقْرَأْ (Form I imp.), عَلَّمَ (Form II), يَعْلَمْ (Form I present).
كَاتِبٌ كَتَبَ كِتَاباً فِي مَكْتَبَةٍ وَالرِّسَالَةُ مَكْتُوبَةٌ
Kātibun kataba kitāban fī maktabatin wa-r-risālatu maktūbah
A writer wrote a book in a library and the letter is written six words from one root ك-ت-ب demonstrating the pattern system.
- The مِيزَان (scale): فَعَلَ is the template ف-ع-ل represent the three root positions; all Arabic morphology maps onto this scale.
- To identify a word's root: remove all prefixes (مَـ, مُـ, اِنْـ, اِـ), suffixes (ـَة, ـَان), and long vowels the remaining consonants are the root.
- Morphology is the fastest route to vocabulary mastery one root (ع-ل-م) yields: عَلِمَ, يَعْلَمُ, عِلْم, عَالِم, مَعْلُوم, عَلَّمَ, تَعَلَّمَ, عَلِيم, أَعْلَم nine words from one root.
- The verb pattern (وَزْن) carries grammatical meaning independent of root: مَفْعُول always means "one upon whom the action fell" مَكْتُوب (written), مَفْهُوم (understood), مَعْلُوم (known).
- Four-letter (quadrilateral) roots also exist: تَرْجَمَ (translated) on وَزْن فَعْلَلَ the same mizan system applies with four positions.
