Lesson 44
Substitute Subject Nāʾib al-Fāʿil
نائب الفاعل
In a passive sentence, the agent is unknown or suppressed. The patient (مَفْعُول) is "promoted" to become the نَائِب الْفَاعِل (substitute agent), taking the nominative case as the new grammatical subject.
Passive Sentence Structure
Active: فَاعِل (nominative) + verb + مَفْعُول (accusative). Passive: verb → passive form + نَائِب الْفَاعِل (nominative, previously the مَفْعُول).

"Man was created weak." (4:28) "The Prophet was sent as a mercy to the worlds."
- Passive verb + nominative نَائِب الْفَاعِل the verb agrees with the promoted subject in gender.
- The original fāʿil is deleted entirely from the passive sentence.
- Passive is extremely common in the Quran for describing Divine actions without stating Allah explicitly as the grammatical subject.
- A preposition phrase can be the نَائِب الْفَاعِل when there is no direct object: سُمِعَ بِهِ (lit. "it was heard about him").
- Masdar can serve as نَائِب الْفَاعِل: ضُرِبَ ضَرْبٌ شَدِيدٌ "a severe striking was struck" the masdar replaces the object.
