وَهُمْ رَاكِعُونَ وَهُمْ كَارِهُون
Wa-hum rākiʿūna wa-hum kārihūn
"While they bow in prayer." "While they are averse." Both are Quranic nominal ḥāl sentences (وَ + pronoun + predicate).
- Nominal ḥāl sentence: must begin with وَ followed by a pronoun back-referencing the dhū l-ḥāl: وَهُوَ / وَهِيَ + predicate.
- Verbal ḥāl sentence: present-tense verb with the same subject as the dhū l-ḥāl دَخَلَ يَضْحَكُ (he entered laughing).
- Past verbal ḥāl requires وَقَدْ: رَجَعَ وَقَدْ أَنْجَزَ (he returned having completed the task) qad makes the past ḥāl unambiguous.
- The dhū l-ḥāl (referent) must be definite you cannot describe the state of an indefinite noun.
- The Quran extensively uses sentence-ḥāl: وَهُمْ رَاكِعُون, وَهُمْ كَارِهُون these nominal ḥāl sentences add vivid circumstantial detail.
