Two Types of Tawkīd
TypeArabicMethodExample
Verbal (laẓī)تَوْكِيد لَفْظِيّRepeat the same wordجَاءَ جَاءَ زَيْدٌ
Meaning (maʿnawī)تَوْكِيد مَعْنَوِيّUse one of the tawkīd wordsجَاءَ زَيْدٌ نَفْسُهُ
سَجَدَ الْمَلَائِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ
Sajada l-malāʾikatu kulluhum ajmaʿūn
"The angels all prostrated, every one of them." (15:30) كُلُّهُمْ then أَجْمَعُون: two consecutive tawkīd maʿnawī words for maximum emphasis.
لَأَغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ الْمُخْلَصِينَ
La-ughwiyannahum ajmaʿīna illā ʿibādaka minhumu l-mukhlaṣīn
"I will surely mislead them all, except Your sincere servants." (15:39-40) أَجْمَعِين is the accusative plural of أَجْمَع confirming totality.
- Tawkīd maʿnawī: uses نَفْس / عَيْن (for exclusivity: "himself/herself") or كُلّ / أَجْمَع (for totality: "all").
- كِلَا + مُضَاف إِلَيْه for dual: كِلَا الطَّالِبَيْنِ (both the two students) takes a dual pronoun suffix.
- Double tawkīd (كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُون, 15:30) stresses total inclusion all angels without a single exception.
- Tawkīd laẓī (verbal): repeat the same word جَاءَ جَاءَ زَيْدٌ more emphatic than a single use; common in poetry and speech.
- Tawkīd takes the same case as its مُؤَكَّد (the noun it emphasises) and agrees in gender/number it is a tābiʿ (dependent).
