مَا هَذَا؟ هَذَا مَسْجِدٌ كَبِيرٌ. مَا تِلْكَ؟ تِلْكَ مَدْرَسَةٌ جَدِيدَة.
Mā hādhā? Hādhā masjidun kabīrun. Mā tilka? Tilka madrasatun jadīda.
What is this? This is a big mosque. What is that? That is a new school.
لِمَنْ هَذِهِ الْحَقِيبَةُ؟ هِيَ لِأَحْمَدَ. يَا أُسْتَاذُ، أَيْنَ الْكِتَابُ؟ هُوَ عَلَى الطَّاوِلَةِ.
Li-man hādhihi l-ḥaqība? Hiya li-Aḥmada. Yā ustādhu, ayna l-kitābu? Huwa ʿalā ṭ-ṭāwila.

أ: مَا هَذِهِ؟ ب: هَذِهِ مَدْرَسَةٌ. أ: هَلْ هِيَ كَبِيرَةٌ؟ ب: نَعَمْ، هِيَ كَبِيرَةٌ وَجَدِيدَة. أ: لِمَنْ هِيَ؟ ب: هِيَ لِلطُّلَّابِ.
A: Mā hādhihi? B: Hādhihi madrasa. A: Hal hiya kabīra? B: Naʿam, hiya kabīratun wa-jadīda. A: Li-man hiya? B: Hiya liṭ-ṭullāb.
A: What is this? B: This is a school. A: Is it big? B: Yes, it is big and new. A: Who does it belong to? B: It belongs to the students.
Pronunciation Focus
Final revision drill: read each sentence aloud, identifying (1) is the noun masculine or feminine? (2) is it definite or indefinite? (3) does the adjective agree? If you answer all three instantly for every noun you read, your Book One foundation is solid.
- Practice مَا هَذَا؟ / مَا هَذِهِ؟ with every object you see make it a habit.
- Test gender: is the adjective in the correct form (with or without ة)?
- الـ before sun letters produces a shaddah train your ear to catch it in native speech.
- لِمَنْ؟ (li-man = whose?) question for ownership. أَيْنَ؟ (ayna = where?) question for location.
- هَلْ = yes/no question marker answered with نَعَمْ (yes) or لَا (no).
