A Makkan sūrah of 3 verses among the most concise summaries of the entire Quran's message. By time as witness, all of humanity is in loss except four combined qualities: faith, righteous deeds, mutual encouragement of truth, and mutual encouragement of patience.

Al-ʿAṣr swears by time itself Ibn Kathīr notes that Allah swears by time to point to its passage as a warning: time is running out, and within it humanity is either gaining or losing. The oath is followed by a universal negative verdict: "Inna l-insāna la-fī khusr" all of mankind is in loss. The exception clause (illā) then provides the four-part escape from that universal loss.
Imām al-Shāfiʿī famously said, "If people were to ponder only this sūrah, it would be sufficient for them." Ibn Kathīr validates this by showing how the four elements īmān (correct belief), ʿamal ṣāliḥ (righteous deeds), tawāṣī bil-ḥaqq (encouraging truth), tawāṣī bil-ṣabr (encouraging patience) together cover the entire scope of individual and collective Islamic duty. Each alone is insufficient; all four are required simultaneously.
- Time as oath: Allah swears by ʿaṣr (time/afternoon) to signal the urgency time passes and humanity is losing unless they act on the four conditions.
- Universal loss: The default state of all humanity is khusr (loss) not just the wicked, but anyone who lacks the four conditions, even if apparently comfortable.
