Sūrah Al-Ḥadīd The Iron

29 verses, Madanī. Spend in the cause of Allah before the day when there is no return. The life of this world is only amusement and diversion the Hereafter is the true life. The monasticism that Christians innovated was not prescribed they did not uphold it properly. Allah sent iron with great strength and benefit for mankind.

The life of this world (57:20): "Know that the life of this world is only amusement, diversion, adornment, mutual boasting, and rivalry in wealth and children like the example of a rain whose plant growth pleases the tillers, then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes scattered debris." Ibn Kathīr: the five-stage description of worldly life play, sport, beauty, boasting, competition each one more hollow than the last. The crop analogy: green, yellow, crumbled so too the human lifespan.
Iron sent down for human benefit (57:25): "We sent Our messengers with clear evidences and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that people may maintain justice. And We sent down iron, wherein is great military might and benefits for the people." Ibn Kathīr: three things sent down together scripture, scale (justice), and iron (force). Islamic governance requires all three: guidance, justice, and the power to enforce it when necessary.
- Light for the believers on the Day (57:12): "On the Day you will see the believing men and believing women, their light proceeding before them and on their right." Ibn Kathīr: the nūr of the believers comes from their ṣalāh, their fasting, their dhikr every act of worship stores as light for the hereafter.
- The hypocrites asking for light (57:13): "On the Day the hypocrites will say to the believers: Wait for us so we can take some of your light." But a wall will be placed between them with a gate inside it mercy, outside it punishment. Ibn Kathīr: the light cannot be shared it was earned individually in the dunya.
- The prophets and their witnesses (57:19): "Those who believe in Allah and His messengers they are the truthful ones (ṣiddīqūn) and the witnesses (shuhadāʾ) with their Lord." Ibn Kathīr: the ṣiddīqūn are a rank below the prophets, the shuhadāʾ include those who die for Allah's cause.
- No calamity occurs except with divine knowledge (57:22): "No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being." Ibn Kathīr: every calamity was written 50,000 years before creation knowledge of this brings peace: nothing is random, nothing is unjust.
- Do not grieve over what you missed (57:23): "In order that you not despair over what has eluded you and not exult over what He has given you." Ibn Kathīr: the psychological medicine two extremes to avoid: grief at loss, arrogance at gain. Both are healed by belief in divine decree.
