Stage by stage (84:19): "You will surely ride stage after stage." Ibn Kathīr: multiple interpretations (1) the journey of the human from womb to birth to death to resurrection to judgement to final destination; (2) the nations riding the sky to the sky, referring to the ascension of souls. The most comprehensive understanding: the human life is not static every moment is a transition through a divinely ordered sequence.
The sky and earth obey (84:1–5): "When the sky is split apart and it has obeyed its Lord and was obligated. And when the earth is spread out and has cast out what was within it and emptied and has obeyed its Lord and was obligated." Ibn Kathīr: the creation obeys without hesitation the sky splits when commanded, the earth spreads when commanded. The obedience of inanimate creation shames the disobedience of the being given free will.
- The easy accounting (84:8): Ibn Kathīr cites the ḥadīth of ʿĀʾishah she asked the Prophet ﷺ about "easy accounting." He said: "It is when the record is shown to them and they pass through it whoever is questioned in detail has perished." Easy accounting means: shown the deeds, acknowledged, and passed not detailed cross-examination.
- Believing in the Qurʾān not prostrating? (84:20–21): "So what is the matter with them that they do not believe? And when the Qurʾān is recited to them, they do not prostrate?" Ibn Kathīr: the prostration verse both a reproach and a command. When this verse is recited, a prostration is recommended as an expression of submission to the Qurʾān's authority.
- The gradual journey (84:19): Ibn Kathīr: the journey is cosmic the human soul moves through states: from non-existence, to the womb, to the world, to the grave, to the barzakh, to resurrection, to the standing, to the judgement, to the final destination. Each stage is a ṭabaq (layer/level) you cannot skip any stage.
- The moon and the night witnesses (84:16–18): "So I swear by the twilight and by the night and what it envelops and by the moon when it becomes full." Ibn Kathīr: the moon at its fullest as a witness to divine power and precision. The moon's cycle is measured an example of the divine precision that also measures every human deed.
- Pain and no reward for the disbelievers (84:24): "So give them tidings of a painful punishment." Ibn Kathīr: the final word of the surah to those who mock the Qurʾān the only tidings available to them. Not invitation, not warning the announcement of inevitable consequence.
