Sūrah Fuṣṣilat Explained in Detail

54 verses, Makkī. Second of the Ḥawāmīm. The Qurʾān as a book whose verses are explained in detail in Arabic for people who know. The disbelievers plugged their ears and refused to listen. The earth and heaven obeyed when commanded. On the Day of Judgement, the skin, ears, and eyes will testify against their owners.

Key Themes from Ibn Kathīr
Limbs testifying (41:20–22): "When they reach it, their hearing, their sight, and their skins will testify against them for what they used to do. And they will say to their skins: Why did you testify against us? They will say: Allah gave us speech He who gave speech to all things." Ibn Kathīr records the ḥadīth: a man thought his sins were hidden between him and Allah but the limbs themselves witnessed every act.
Steadfastness and the angels (41:30–31): "Indeed those who said Our Lord is Allah, then remained steadfast the angels descend upon them: Do not fear and do not grieve, and receive good news of Paradise which you were promised. We were your allies in the worldly life and are in the Hereafter." Ibn Kathīr: the angels accompany the believer through life and at the moment of death whispering reassurance, removing fear.
- The Qurʾān in Arabic (41:3): "A Book whose verses are explained in detail an Arabic Qurʾān for people who know." Ibn Kathīr: the Qurʾān is in the most eloquent language, fully detailed (fuṣṣilat) every matter of creed, law, and character is addressed within it.
- Turn away and they say: Our hearts are screened (41:4–5): The disbelievers say their hearts are screened from the Prophet's call, their ears are deaf, there is a barrier between them. Ibn Kathīr: wilful rejection not inability to hear, but a deliberate turning away that results in Allah sealing the heart.
- Signs in the horizons and in themselves (41:53): "We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth." Ibn Kathīr: the external universe and internal human physiology both point to the Creator every discovery of science is another sign.
- The best response to evil (41:34): "Repel evil with that which is better then the one between whom and you there is enmity will become as a close friend." Ibn Kathīr: patience and goodness transforms enemies this is the highest human character trait and the hardest to achieve.
- Prostration of creation (41:37–38): "Among His signs are the night and day and the sun and moon do not prostrate to the sun or the moon but prostrate to Allah who created them." The angels in His presence glorify Him night and day without tiring.
