Key Themes from Ibn Kathīr

Ibn Kathīr provides extensive historical context: Abrāha was a Christian Abyssinian viceroy of Yemen who built a cathedral called al-Qullays in Ṣanʿāʾ to divert Ḥajj pilgrimage from Makkah, then marched with his war elephants (led by the elephant Maḥmūd) to destroy the Kaʿbah after one of the Quraysh defiled his cathedral. ʿAbdul Muṭṭalib, grandfather of the Prophet , said to Abrāha: "I am the lord of the camels; the House has a Lord who will protect it."

The elephant stopped and would not proceed toward Makkah despite being prodded. Then Allah sent flocks of birds (abābīl) carrying stones of baked clay (ḥijārah min sijjīl) each bird carrying three stones, one in the beak and one in each claw and pelted the army. The soldiers fell like consumed straw (ʿaṣf maʾkūl), the elephant fled, and Abrāha retreated to Yemen where he died. This occurred in the year of the Prophet's birth the Quraysh lived through this miracle as a living memory when the Quran was revealed.

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ A-lam tara kayfa faʿala rabbuka bi-aṣḥābi l-fīl "Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?" (105:1) Ibn Kathīr: addressed to the Prophet and those who knew the story; many Quraysh witnesses were still alive when the sūrah was revealed.
تَرْمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ ۝ فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍ Tarmīhim bi-ḥijāratin min sijjīl fa-jaʿalahum ka-ʿaṣfin maʾkūl "Striking them with stones of hard clay and He made them like eaten straw" (105:4–5) Ibn Kathīr: sijjīl = hard baked clay (from Persian); the army was reduced to the consistency of husks eaten by insects completely destroyed.
  • Year of the Elephant: The event occurred approximately 50 days before the Prophet's birth the Quraysh remembered it vividly, making the Quran's reference to it an undeniable miracle.
  • The elephant's refusal: Maḥmūd the elephant prostrated toward Makkah and refused to advance even animals recognized the House's sanctity.
  • ʿAbdul Muṭṭalib's statement: "The House has a Lord who will protect it" a statement of tawakkul that preceded the miracle, recorded by Ibn Kathīr as evidence of remnant Ibrāhīmic monotheism.
  • Abābīl: Birds unknown to the Arabs green birds from the sea carrying three stones each; their unprecedented nature confirmed the miraculous character of the event.
  • Divine protection of the Kaʿbah: The real lesson: no human power can overcome Allah's protection of His House, a promise that continues to Makkan inviolability.
