Sūrah Ar-Rūm The Romans

60 verses, Makkī. Opens with the remarkable prophecy: the Romans have been defeated but within a few years they will be victorious. This was fulfilled within nine years. Ibn Kathīr then covers the signs of Allah in creation: marriage, sleep, thunder, rain, and the diversity of human languages and colours all signs for people who reflect.

The Roman prophecy (30:1–5): The Persians defeated the Romans circa 614 CE the polytheists of Makkah rejoiced. The Qurʾān revealed: the Romans will be victorious within biḍʿ sinīn (three to nine years). Abū Bakr ؓ bet the Quraysh on this. The Romans won at Issus in 624 CE the same year as Badr. Ibn Kathīr: this is among the most precise and verifiable prophecies in the Qurʾān.
Five signs in creation (30:20–25): He created you from dust then you became human beings spreading out (sign). He created mates from among yourselves and placed love and mercy between you (sign). The creation of heavens and earth, the diversity of your languages and colours (sign). Your sleep by night and day, and your seeking of His bounty (sign). The lightning showing fear and hope (sign). He sends down rain bringing the earth to life after its death (sign). In each: signs for people who reason, reflect, listen, understand.
- The fiṭrah verse (30:30): The Prophet ﷺ said: "Every child is born upon the fiṭrah then his parents make him Jewish, Christian, or Magian." Ibn Kathīr: the fiṭrah is the innate recognition of Allah and inclination to worship religion is the default, deviation is the acquired condition.
- Give the relative their right (30:38): "So give the relative his right, and the needy, and the traveller that is best for those who desire the face of Allah." Three recipients of generosity listed together the family, the poor, the wayfarer.
- Ribā destroys, zakāh grows (30:39): "And whatever you give for interest to increase within the wealth of people will not increase with Allah. But what you give in zakāh desiring the face of Allah those are the multipliers." The divine economics: interest shrinks in the sight of Allah; charity multiplies.
- Corruption appeared on land and sea (30:41): "Corruption has appeared in the land and sea because of what the hands of people have earned, so that He may let them taste part of what they have done that perhaps they will return." Ibn Kathīr: human moral corruption manifests in environmental and social dysfunction.
- The weak against the strong (30:47): Every prophet We sent We aided them. It was incumbent upon Us to help the believers. Ibn Kathīr: divine assistance to the believers is not conditional on numbers but on taqwā and sincerity.
