Key TermإِيلَافِهِمْĪlāfihimTheir covenant / their habituation the treaty that enabled safe passage for Quraysh trade caravans

Key Themes from Ibn Kathīr

The "īlāf" (covenant or habituation) refers to the treaties Hāshim ibn ʿAbd Manāf (great-grandfather of the Prophet ) had secured with rulers across the trade routes with the Ghassānids of Shām, the Himyarites of Yemen, and Persian-aligned rulers of Iraq ensuring Quraysh caravans safe passage. This commercial security was rooted in Quraysh's unique status as custodians of the Kaʿbah, respected by all Arabs.

Ibn Kathīr emphasizes the logical flow connecting this sūrah to the previous: Allah destroyed the Elephant army to protect the Kaʿbah, thereby preserving Quraysh's privileged position; now Quraysh must recognize who gave them this privilege. "Who fed them against hunger and secured them against fear" two fundamental human needs (food and safety) fulfilled by Allah through the Kaʿbah's prestige. Their only obligation in return is to worship this Lord alone.

لِإِيلَافِ قُرَيْشٍ ۝ إِيلَافِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ الشِّتَاءِ وَالصَّيْفِ Li-īlāfi Quraysh īlāfihim riḥlata sh-shitāʾi wa-ṣ-ṣayf "For the accustomed security of Quraysh their accustomed security in the journeys of winter and summer" (106:1–2) Ibn Kathīr: the two annual trade caravans that sustained Makkah's economy were made possible by the Kaʿbah's prestige among Arab tribes.
فَلْيَعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَٰذَا الْبَيْتِ ۝ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٍ وَآمَنَهُم مِّنْ خَوْفٍ Fa-l-yaʿbudū rabba hādhā l-bayt alladhī aṭʿamahum min jūʿin wa-āmanahum min khawf "Let them worship the Lord of this House who fed them against hunger and secured them against fear" (106:3–4) the command of gratitude: worship the One who gave you these two essential gifts.
  • Linked to Al-Fīl: Some scholars read these as one sūrah the Elephant army was destroyed so that Quraysh's trade privilege could continue; the two sūrahs together form a gift → obligation argument.
  • Hāshim's treaties: The Prophet's ancestor secured the trade treaties that gave Quraysh economic security a historical blessing rooted in his role at the Kaʿbah.
  • Two journeys: Winter to Yemen (spices, cloth) and summer to Shām (grain, olive oil) Makkah's sustenance depended entirely on these twice-yearly caravans.
  • Rabb hadhā l-bayt: "Lord of this House" not naming Allah directly but pointing to the Kaʿbah as the identifier; the Quraysh knew exactly who owned the House they guarded.
  • Hunger and fear: The two primal human threats overcome by Allah the Quran identifies the two most basic needs (food and security) as the ground for gratitude and worship.
