The shortest sūrah in the Quran 3 verses. Allah grants the Prophet ﷺ al-Kawthar (a river in Paradise, and abundant good), commands prayer and sacrifice to Him alone, and declares that it is his enemy who is cut off (al-abtar), not the Prophet.

When the Prophet's sons died in infancy, the Quraysh mocked him as al-abtar a man cut off from legacy, without male heirs to carry his name. ʿĀṣ ibn Wāʾil al-Sahmī and others used this taunt. Ibn Kathīr records the occasion of revelation as this mockery, with Allah responding by granting the Prophet the greatest legacy: al-Kawthar a river in Paradise described in authentic ḥadīths (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim) as whiter than milk, cooler than ice, sweeter than honey, with cups around it like the stars in number, and banks of gold and silver pearls.
The command "faṣalli li-rabbika wa-nḥar" "pray to your Lord and sacrifice" is interpreted by Ibn Kathīr as commanding the unique Islamic combination of ṣalāh directed purely to Allah and the qurbānī (sacrifice) dedicated purely to Allah, in contrast to those who pray and sacrifice to idols. The final verse reverses the taunt: "Inna shāniʾaka huwa l-abtar" your hater is the cut-off one; the Prophet's legacy is eternal through his Ummah and the Quran.
