Sūrah Aṭ-Ṭāriq The Morning Star

17 verses, Makkī. By the sky and the night visitor the piercing star. Every soul has over it a guardian. Let the human consider from what he was created from a spurting fluid. On the Day the secrets are tested the human has no power and no helper. The Qurʾān is a decisive word it is not a jest.

The star piercing the darkness (86:1–3): "By the sky and the night visitor and what will make you know what the night visitor is the piercing star." Ibn Kathīr: the ṭāriq is the bright star that comes by night identified by scholars as Zuhal (Saturn) or the planet Venus, or a shooting star. Its brilliance cutting through the darkness is the oath just as it pierces the dark sky, the revelation pierces the darkness of ignorance.
Resurrection from water (86:5–8): "So let the human consider from what he was created he was created from a spurting fluid emerging from between the backbone and the ribs. Indeed Allah is able to return him." Ibn Kathīr: the argument from origin the one who created human life from a drop can certainly recreate that same life after death. The specificity of "between the backbone and the ribs" identifies the physiological region of reproductive organs.
- The Day secrets are exposed (86:9): "On the Day when secrets will be put on trial." Ibn Kathīr: every hidden sin, every concealed intention, every secret betrayal all will be displayed and examined. The privacy of the dunya is temporary; the disclosure of the hereafter is permanent.
- No power and no helper (86:10): "He will have no power and no helper." Ibn Kathīr: the complete isolation of the sinner on the Day of Judgement stripped of all the supports that gave confidence in the dunya. Power was from connections; connections are severed. Help was from family; family has their own terror to face.
- The disbelievers plotting (86:15–16): "Indeed they are planning a plan and I am planning a plan." Ibn Kathīr: the Quraysh plotted against the Prophet ﷺ at Dār al-Nadwah but Allah's plan is mightier. Every human plot against the truth is countered by divine planning that encompasses and overrides it.
- Give respite to the disbelievers (86:17): "So give respite to the disbelievers give them time." Ibn Kathīr: the command of patience the disbelievers' temporary victory is divinely permitted as a test. But the respite has an end the patience of the believer is matched by the certainty of divine justice arriving.
- The Qurʾān as the decisive speech (86:13): Ibn Kathīr: qawl faṣl the Qurʾān speaks the final word on every matter. In theology: decisive. In law: binding. In history: accurate. In prophecy: fulfilled. It is not entertainment, not poetry, not madness it is the most serious communication that has ever come to humanity.
