11 verses, Madanī. The unlettered Prophet ﷺ sent among the unlettered reciting, purifying, teaching. The Jews who were given the Torah but did not carry it are like a donkey carrying books. When the call to Friday prayer is made, hasten to it and leave trade. After the prayer, disperse in the earth and seek Allah's bounty.

The unlettered Prophet among the unlettered (62:2): "It is He who sent among the unlettered a Messenger from among themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Scripture and wisdom although they were before in clear error." Ibn Kathīr: the Prophet ﷺ was himself umī (unlettered) making the Qurʾān's eloquence and depth an undeniable miracle. He purified, taught, and elevated the Arab nation from the depths of ignorance to the summit of civilisation.
The abandoned Friday market (62:11): While the Prophet ﷺ was giving the Friday khuṭbah, a trading caravan arrived from Syria with drums and fanfare. Most of the congregation left for the market only twelve remained. Allah revealed: "And when they saw a transaction or an amusement, they dispersed toward it and left you standing." Ibn Kathīr: the revelation of the Friday obligation came partly to prevent this the call to prayer when made obligatorily prohibits leaving for worldly reasons.
- Others not yet joined (62:3): "And others of them who have not yet joined them." Ibn Kathīr cites the ḥadīth: the Companions asked who they were. The Prophet ﷺ placed his hand on Salmān al-Fārisī and said: "If faith were in the Pleiades, men from among these would reach it." the Persian and non-Arab Muslims of later generations.
- This is Allah's bounty He gives it to whom He wills (62:4): The grace of prophethood and the Qurʾān was given to an Arab people not by their merit but by divine choice. - Wishing for death proves the liars (62:6–7): The Prophet ﷺ challenged the Jews: if you are the friends of Allah alone, wish for death. They would never wish for it because of what their hands had sent forward. Ibn Kathīr: the test is valid those who truly believe in a beautiful hereafter do not fear death; those who hide their doubt cling to life.
- Seek bounty after the prayer (62:10): "When the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah." Ibn Kathīr: the balance prayer first, then lawful work. The Friday prayer does not abolish commerce; it prioritises worship then returns people to their responsibilities.
