Key Themes from Ibn Kathīr

"O man what has deceived you?" (82:6–8): "O man what has deceived you concerning your Generous Lord who created you, proportioned you, and assembled you in whatever form He willed?" Ibn Kathīr: the most intimate divine address in the Juzʾ ʿAmma. Allah asks directly: what convinced you that you could ignore Me? The Generous Lord who built you perfectly is also the Just Lord who will account for every deed. The deception comes from Shayṭān, from the dunya's attractions, and from the human's own hopes of indefinite delay.

The noble and recording angels (82:10–12): "And indeed over you are appointed guardian keepers noble, recording they know all that you do." Ibn Kathīr: Kirāman Kātibīn the honoured scribes. No deed, no word, no intention acted upon escapes their record. The right-hand angel records good deeds; the left records bad. The surah's reminder that every moment is witnessed should produce constant awareness.

يَا أَيُّهَا الْإِنسَانُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ الْكَرِيمِ ۝ الَّذِي خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّاكَ فَعَدَلَكَ Yā ayyuhā l-insānu mā gharraka bi-rabbika l-karīm · alladhī khalaqaka fa-sawwāka fa-ʿadalak O man what has deceived you concerning your Generous Lord who created you, proportioned you, and assembled you? (82:6–7)
وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ لَحَافِظِينَ ۝ كِرَامًا كَاتِبِينَ ۝ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ Wa inna ʿalaykum la-ḥāfiẓīn · kirāman kātibīn · yaʿlamūna mā tafʿalūn And indeed over you are appointed guardian keepers noble, recording they know all that you do. (82:10–12)
  • Four signs of the Hour (82:1–4): Sky cleft stars scattered seas erupted graves overturned. Ibn Kathīr: the four elements of human existence undone the roof (sky), the lights (stars), the water (seas), the resting places of the dead (graves). Everything that forms the framework of life dissolves simultaneously.
  • What the soul put forward and left behind (82:5): "Every soul will know what it has sent forth and left behind." Ibn Kathīr: sent forth good deeds already performed. Left behind the continuous deeds that continue benefitting after death (ongoing charity, knowledge spread, righteous children). Both categories are accounted for.
  • The righteous in bliss (82:13): "Indeed the righteous will be in bliss." Ibn Kathīr: naʿīm all-encompassing joy and comfort. Not specified in detail here the Qurʾān describes it in full in other surahs; here the brevity itself is a form of awe.
  • The wicked in Hell (82:14): "And indeed the wicked will be in Hell-fire they will enter it on the Day of Recompense and they will not be absent from it." Ibn Kathīr: no escape, no temporary release permanent residence for the wicked who die as such.
  • Nothing owns the matter on that Day (82:19): "The Day when no soul will possess anything for another soul and the command that Day is with Allah." Ibn Kathīr: absolute divine sovereignty on the Day of Judgement no human power, wealth, relationship, or intercession functions without specific divine permission.
